CLEVELAND– Joanne Calderwood may have had four inches on Jessica Andrade, but Andrade made it clear from the get-go she was the more powerful fighter.
Andrade (15-5 MMA, 6-3 UFC) muscled Calderwood (11-2 MMA, 3-2 UFC) to the canvas just one minute into their meeting and proceeded to have her method with the “TUF 20″ veterinarian, setting up a submission in the first round.
The strawweight bout opened today’s UFC 203 primary card at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland. It aired on pay-per-view following prelims on FS1 and UFC Fight Pass.
Andrade tapped Calderwood with a textbook guillotine choke at the 4:38 mark of the opening frame, using a powerful leading game to leave the Scottish fighter unprepared for a quick choke attempt. The Brazilian continues to acquire momentum in the ladies’s strawweight division, where he migrated after giving up more height and reach at bantamweight.
Calderwood did her best to keep the tornado-like Andrade at bay, firing off kicks early. An elbow opened a cut on the Brazilian as she made it within, but that would not stop her from raising her challenger in the air and ending with a big slam. Landing in side control, Andrade aimed to keep dominant position while Calderwood tried to retort with elbows from the bottom. It only provided a quick hold-up to Andrad’s march, with another slam, this time from guard, flaunting Andrade’s strength.
As Calderwood finally managed to get back to her feet, Andrade dropped for the guillotine choke. After a brief struggle, there was no choice however to tap. Andrade has now won two directly at 115 pounds, while Calderwood goes back to the drawing board after a one-off win at flyweight versus Valerie Letourneau and a decision at strawweight over Cortney Casey.
” The main objective going in was to remain standing and get the knockout like I had actually been talking about all week,” Andrade said. “However, I knew that if I got her in the clinch or on the ground I would have the advantage. I simply wish to remain focused and keep training today. If the UFC wants me to eliminate in Brazil, Japan or anywhere tomorrow, I would. If they provide me the title shot, I’m ready for that, too.”
